Working Past 65? Understanding Your Medicare Options

If you’re still working at 65, you may be able to delay Medicare—or you may need to enroll. The right choice depends on your employer coverage and how Medicare works with your plan.

When You Can Delay Medicare?

You may be able to delay Part B without a penalty if:

  • Your employer has 20 or more employees
  • You have creditable coverage (including a spouse’s plan)

When your coverage ends, you’ll have an 8-month Special Enrollment Period to enroll.

When You Should Enroll at 65

You should typically enroll if:

  • Your employer has fewer than 20 employees
  • Medicare becomes your primary coverage

Coverage that does not qualify you to delay Medicare:

  • COBRA
  • Retiree insurance
  • VA coverage
  • Individual plans
